One publishes to find comrades! So says André Breton. The researchers in the current cycle of the research centre — Breg Horemans, Davide Tidoni, Esteban Donoso, Lili M. Rampre and Pia Louwerens — are ending their trajectories at a.pass with a block focused on publishing, and the myriad of relations implied in committing something to print. Publishing is rarely something that concludes a confined process of solitary thought. It is a social process that — abstractly and manifestly — involves collaboration along the way: sometimes with fellow interlocutors, sometimes with an editor or designer at the other end of the table, sometimes with abstract ideas of what readership might entail. Rather than aiming for a book or for printed matter as a finite goal, we will take publishing as a pretext to build relationships that last over time. How can a publication be set up as an ongoing social gesture, a space for the continued production of meaning and reverberance?
This block has a weekly organization, whereby Tuesdays alternate between a technical-dramaturgical help-desk, and editorial-curatorial approaches. Help-desk Tuesdays are more loosely structured around practical needs of the collective and individual publications. How did you do this? Why would you do that? An asylum is a place of refuge. Of taking leave of the world for a limited period of time. It is a place out of the world. Where rules function differently. Where people without a place of belonging are temporarily ‘parked’ in order to mend their ways. It is a place for the ones that don’t fit the grid: mental patients, refugees, people suffering from ailments of all kinds. Desiring bodies, in search of papers, legitimacy, acceptance, health, reconnection to the outside world.
In that sense it is also a place of hope, a world-in-a-world where difference can live and be accepted. Maybe even celebrated. Where the norms are temporarily suspended, and common sense rules no longer apply. In this gap, in this suspension, wild thoughts can go unchecked. Dubious behaviour flies under the radar. There, we are again...
Again and again, it is necessary to think through the relational fields we are working with. Not only the forced physical distancing, the prohibited hugs, and the masked faces, but also the role of the institutional and individual responsibilities, the new urgencies for presences and absences, and a new mix of carefulness and caring, tinted the relational questions at a.pass with the Corona crisis.
What and who are we to each other in a research group? What does the research group do for us? What does it mean to be associate researchers - what does it mean to be a host? What is the institutional framework - what does it allow, and what does it problematize? What kind of projections are made into the institutional, and what kind of speculations could we unleash on them?
The virus highlights these questions in a very special way. Bodily distanced, we are still physically related. It feels like a realtime training in relational ontology. Donna Haraway manifests it as “beings do not pre-exist their relating" and therefore relations do produce us, not the other way round. This way to see ontology is into our face any time we have to say hello to somebody and hesitate whether to show the elbow, to hug or just to stay still at 1,5m apart. Anyway, or specifically now, it’s worth putting the focus more on shaping relations around us rather than to shape ourselves. If this is true, attitudes of hosting, being it places, practices, contexts, and perspectives are an approach we will explore.

The In-Between Block 2020 II

The current In-Between Block is a simple infrastructure of extended mentoring that supports the a.pass researchers in the development of their work during the Coronavirus measures.
a.pass supports the researchers in using the current situation to reflect on the resonance of their practices within the contemporary social, ecological, artistic, political and economical discourses. A series of scores are being developed and practiced to keep the contact and the exchange going between the researchers . This shared practice over distance allows us to reflect on the crisis and support each other through it.
The mentors for the In-Between Block are Elke Van Campenhout, Philippine Hoegen, Krõõt Juurak and Sara Manente.
We are looking forward to the moment when we can come together again!

a.pass postgraduate program invites artists, researchers, cultural workers to challenge the limits of their practice through developing artistic research methodologies that bring to the forefront the performative, spatial and collaborative aspects of their projects.
The program opens a space for experimental modes of practice and critical thinking. Artists and researchers are invited to follow their self-organised research as a trajectory within an environment of collaboration and participation. They engage in a series of presentations and feedback practices, workshops, seminars, individual/collective mentoring, and modular interactions with curators and the other artists and researchers participating in the program.

Milieu(s) is a collective artistic research environment for the participants, mentors and other workers of the a.pass program. In a shared workspace we develop their practices in a collaborative context, on the basis of self-organisation and self-rule. Through individual actions Milieu(s) generates a dynamic territory for exchange, cooperation and (tacit) negotiation. A mutual creation of the individual and the common.
We invite different guests to enter into this environment with us, to participate, open up the proposals and issues addressed in the collective work and/or to problematize the situation, fueling the ecology of ideas and practices in Milieu(s).
Milieu(s) is taking place between the 28th of April to the 3rd of August 2014, in the common space of the 4th floor of the a.pass studio in de Bottelarij in Brussels.

From Sep till Nov 2018 a.pass and School Of Love will start a flirt with each other, develop a relationship and hopefully make (produce) love.
SOL is a collective platform that was initiated some years ago*, inspired by the interest in both love and school as charged with potential to generate new politics and relations in the world. SOL is practiced through regular meetings, but follows no curriculum. Instead, it develops a spontaneous program through the presence and interest of its participants. SOL is basically an invitation to hang out. But to hang out deeply. To practice school as a place of free time – free to study things as they appear, separated from the dependency on the time and space of social order and production. And to practice love – Not the kind of love that is generated through affirmation of who we think we are, but love as an act of giving by allowing it to transform us. Read more..

This block combines institutional critique with a fundamental depiction of Performance in its various interpretations in economy, administration, performing arts, and sociology. Performance stands for productivity and efficiency as much as for presence, representation, and the transformative power of speech.
Investigating the interdependency between our artistic research practice and its surrounding adinistrative and economic supportstructures, we will develop a pattern language for conditioning practices in the arts - a pattern language as a set of tools for finding the 'institute' behind our research.

The problem of the score

From May till July 2017 the a.pass post-master program questions how structures pre-determine singular outcomes, and to what extent they imply relationality. Every system is a network of connections and the way the system is set to operate defines forms of relation which reveal ideological standpoints. In other words modes of interaction are formatting forces that construct worlds. If we think that way, what kind of problems do our research structures entail? And if we can think a polyphonic world , constituted by multiple models, how do we consider our own structure as a relational one? What kind of technologies are we putting into place? What kind of invitation are we making? And to whom?
The notions of ‘apparatus’ and ‘tentacular thinking’ will be key to understanding and experiencing the problem of score in contextual ecologies. Apparatuses, as coined by Foucault and Agamben, are systems of governance that enable relationships between beings and structures through which the subject is constructed. During former block Donna Haraway introduced us to tentacular thinking as a place from which one can build relations to economical, biological, philosophical, productional, institutional, etc orders. Together with the a.pass researchers, workshop givers and guests we reflect on them, challenge our practices and relate to other authors and art makers. Read more..

The relation between writing and performance
The proposal for this block follows up on scores as a tool to organize dialogical or intersubjective formats for exchange in artistic practice and research. In the past two years I developed in the frame of a.pass a score for writing practice, ‘Writing Scores’ and a score for performance ‘Perform Back Score’, both as discursive tools. Both scores created a platform for the different researches to co-habitate and to reflect back the methods and strategies each of us use in the making and thinking of our practices. the new structure for dedicated mentorings (3×2 or 2×3)
The dedicated mentors for this block are Abu Ali * Toni Serra, Bart Van den Eynde, Lilia Mestre and Elke Van Campenhout. Since some participants preferred to have a more in-depth contact with their mentors, we changed the set-up of the sessions as follows: out of the four mentors each participant chooses
-3 mentors and has 2 sessions with each of them (regular)
-2 mentors and has 3 sessions with each of them (intense)
Since the dedicated mentors each are responsible for one day during the first Workshop on Artistic Research, we will be able to decide on who, what and how at the end of the first week.
On top of these mentors you will also be mentored a peer participant of your choice who will follow you throughout the whole block, and with whom you meet also at least twice. For this block we would like you to experiment with the mentoring format, and to contribute to our Toolkit for Mentoring, by adding alternative formats for mentoring through practice, movement, double self-interviews, through intermediary pets, objects or cooking sessions, … Whatever you think might get the juices flowing.
the INTERVIEW SESSIONS
Throughout the block each participant also develops an interview practice, in 3 sessions, based on questions that appeared in their own cases. The three stages of the interview throughout the block can take on different forms: through language, audio or image, addressing one person at the the time, or conducting (small) group interviews. Written or spoken or walked. In the end the three stages of the interview will serve as a starting point for the sessions during End Week in PAF.

Fictionalising the real as a critique to produce alternatives to ideology.
Speculating on the impossible to construct a possible.
Considering imagination not as escapism but as an operative vehicle for change.
The unacceptable reveals the limitations of the acceptable.
The untouchable foreshadows the adventurous discovery of difference.

As a red thread throughout the block the participants engage in a weekly communal reading practice of the book ‘Realist Magic – Object, Ontology, Causality’ by Timothy Morton.
Reading and discussing in-depth this one central text allows for the development of a common ground of reference and connection that functions as a backdrop to the workshops and practices that shape the block. The Reading Circle happens on Monday evenings from 6pm to 10pm.

House of Spirits
The House of Spirits is a common space for the (re)collection, digestion and transformation of the traces of the individual researches and workshops. The House opens up a space for the shamans/conservators of the Research Centre, as well as some of the participants. Every week another shaman practices in the House of Spirits, working with the case objects of the participants or with left-overs of the workshop, developing a shared ritual for the a.pass group. The strategies of the shaman include reordering, cataloguing, magical transformations, ritual alchemy, displacement and fictionalisation. Read more..
ENGAGING IN THE BLOCK
Collective moments (opening week, half-way-days, and end week) are compulsory for everybody
Beside the collective moments you should engage in alt least 2 workshops proposed in thes block, of which one should be b-workshop. B-workshops are this block Vladimir’s ‘Theory Under The Commons’ workshop and Mala’s ‘With I+II’ workshop.
In order to participate in the Common Conference at the end of the block, you should at least take part in half of the Friday open space sessions.
In order to keep the a.pass archive alive, we have to feed it! Therefore, we would like to introduce the concept of the Caretaker: all a.pass event – workshops and common moments – should be hosted and documented by participants.
You will have one coordinator’s mentoring with Kristien to orientate yourself within a.pass and your own research.
